Profile

Michael Plaxton joined the College of Law in 2008, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. From 2004 to 2008, he was a lecturer in law at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. In 2007, he was the Stead Visiting Professor at the University of Baltimore. He received his BA (Honours) from the University of Western Ontario (1996), his LLB and LLM from the University of Alberta (1999, 2000), and was awarded an SJD from the University of Toronto in 2004. His teaching and research, which has been published in journals around the world, tends to focus on criminal law, evidence, philosophy of law, and constitutional theory. He has published opinion editorials in the Ottawa Citizen, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, the Toronto Star, and the Globe and Mail. He is a contributor to the Huffington Post, and The Court blog. He has been cited by various lower courts, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as in the Canadian House of Commons.
