U of S Western Canada Moot Team victorious at 2017 Sopinka Cup

The U of S Western Canada Moot Team, based out of the College of Law, is celebrating after a win at a national moot competition this past weekend.

The Sopinka Cup is a bilingual jury trial moot sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers and established to honor the memory of the late Mr. Justice John Sopinka, Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Four regional competitions are held across the country with the top eight law schools advancing to the national finals in Ottawa each year. To win its berth in the national finals, the U of S had to place in the top two of the eight Western Canadian teams.

This is the third time the team from the College of Law has won the national title in the last seven years and the fifth time it has placed in the top three in the last seven years. The U of S is now tied for the most Sopinka Cup wins by any school in the history of the competition.

The winning team is comprised of law students Zachary Carter, Brady Knight, Sarah Loewen and Anita Yuk, with Ashley Smith serving as coach. In addition to the team accolades, Yuk won best opening address and Carter won best examination in chief.
