During Pride Month, and throughout the year, USask Law recognizes the leadership of alumni Brad Berg (LLB’92) and Brian Rolfes (LLB’91), whose work advancing 2SLGBTQQIA+ rights is shaping the next generation of legal advocates.

In 2025, USask Law student Skyler Gagne received the scholarship in recognition of her dedication to equity and dignity for all. As she continues her legal studies, Gagne remains committed to protecting and advancing the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities.

"Receiving the Brad Berg & Brian Rolfes 2SLGBTQQIA+ Rights Scholarship has meant a great deal to me, both personally and professionally,” said Gagne. “Receiving recognition for upholding the values that shaped my life long before I entered law school has been deeply affirming.”

Established in 2015, the scholarship supports students whose studies and future careers reflect a strong commitment to advocacy, inclusion, and community leadership.

“Growing up surrounded by queer culture and guided by mentors and loved ones in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community taught me the importance of authenticity, compassion, and standing up for others,” said Gagne.

“This award has reminded me why I chose to study law in the first place," said Gagne. "It has reaffirmed my commitment to using both my personal privilege and my legal education to support and uplift the communities that have given me so much."

Beyond the scholarship, Berg and Rolfes’ influence continues to grow. In 2025, they were honoured with the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Achievement Award for Outstanding Impact for their leadership advancing 2SLGBTQQIA+ rights, including their work on the campaign for equal marriage.

“From very early on there was a connection between societal change and law. I knew that to be a lawyer, there was a responsibility to also participate in your community and in society and hopefully to lead and hopefully to bring about change,” said Berg.

The University of Saskatchewan and the College of Law proudly celebrate and support the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community — during Pride Month and every month.

Together we will support and inspire students to succeed. We invite you to join by supporting current and future students' needs at USask.
