BRITISH COLUMBIA: Articling & Summer
The main coordinated recruitment in Vancouver occurs in September of second year for second year summer positions. Students begin applying in the summer before second year for jobs that commence at the end of second year. It is important that students do their research, outreach and networking in first year. Interviews and offers are typically in October of second year. The first that participate in recruimtent are typically larger firms in larger centers.
Employers will accept applications in a variety of formats i.e. email or Online Applications - for Online applicaitons see VI Desktop online portal.
Articling in B.C.:
It is important to note that most employers who recruit students will fill articling positions with summer students and therefore there may not be many articling positions posted.
For the larger firms in downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver Bar Association sets guidelines which are not mandatory but most employers follow them. The deadline dates are set each year. Students are encouraged to apply well before the deadline date. There are many opportunities with firms outside of the downtown core and many of these firms may not actively recruit students and put up job postings. Students interested in working outside of the larger downtown core should be prepared to actively research firms and make contact through firm visits.
Summering in British Columbia:
In Vancouver, most law firms do not hire first-year students. The deadline date for a majority of positions for second-year students is in August before students come back to law school. Firms often encourage students to have their application package in well before the deadline date.

**The ‘Offer “call” date’ is the Vancouver Bar Association (VBA) guideline (non-mandatory but most larger downtown Vancouver firms comply) date on which firms can make offers to students. The ‘Offer date”’ is the mandatory Law Society rule as to when the offers must remain open. Some smaller and mid-size downtown Vancouver firms will interview before the VBA interview week and make offers before the VBA call date; however, they MUST comply with the Law Society Rule and keep the offers open until 8 a.m. on the Friday of interview week.
Other Articling and Summer Opportunities:
There are many opportunities with legal employers who do not actively recruit law students, and these may arise at any time. The size or geographical location of the firm, the perception of the firm that interested students will contact them directly, the type of practice, or funding structure, may all be factors in a firm's decision not to actively recruit. In the event you are interested in this type of employer, it will be necessary to do research and actively pursue articles by contacting these employers directly. While most will tend to hire after the recruitment phase noted above, it is important to contact these firms early in your law school career to learn about the market, make connections and create opportunities.
