About the event: Shoshanna Paul, a lawyer with Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP (Saskatoon) will discuss the topic of Indigenous culture and intellectual property. Part of her practice includes helping Canadian museums and arts organizations navigate complex issues related to reconciliation.
The speaker: Shoshanna is a member of English River First Nation, a Dene community located in Treaty 10 in northern Saskatchewan. She is a partner with Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP who practices Aboriginal, labour and employment and intellectual property law, with a focus on negotiation, consultation, and governance for Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and organizations.
Shoshanna has acted primarily for First Nation governments and their organizations in developing and implementing their own laws and policies, including land codes pursuant to the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management Act or personnel policies, including respectful workplace policies. Shoshanna has also worked on the negotiation and litigation of specific claims, as well as human rights and unjust dismissal disputes under the Canada Labour Code. Shoshanna also helps Canadian museums and arts organizations navigate complex issues related to reconciliation.
In addition to her practice, Shoshanna is the moot coach for the University of Saskatchewan College of Law’s Kawaskimhon National Moot team. She is also the Vice-Chair for the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada’s Indigenous Intellectual Property Committee.
