Past president of law society directs donation to student health and wellness
We spotlight a donation from the Law Society of Saskatchewan in honour of past president Suzanne Lalonde KC. Lalonde, who graduated from USask Law in 2000, chose to direct the donation to student health and wellness initiatives.
“I believe it is critical to support the well-being of law students. Nurturing a culture of wellness for legal professionals should begin in law school," Lalonde wrote, describing her reasons for the donation. "Many legal professionals face challenges maintaining a healthy work life balance, and the stress of practice can weigh heavy, especially on young lawyers.
“I believe it is important to give our law students the skills they need to manage the stress of practice so they can thrive as professionals. Healthier students will make better lawyers."
Our thanks to Suzanne Lalonde and the Law Society for this important donation.
MLT Aikins LLP donates $500,000
A generous $500,000 donation from MLT Aikins will ease financial barriers for students entering law and help to develop the next generation of legal professionals.
This donation to USask’s Be What the World Needs campaign will directly benefit students pursuing their legal education in the college through scholarships that recognize academic excellence, leadership potential and a commitment to public service.
The gift will also support access to education for Indigenous students and will be designated for Indigenous law entrance scholarships and awards.
Enhancing reputation of college important to volunteers
We are grateful to the Honourable Wendy G. Baker, retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and all of the alumni volunteers working hard on the Be What the World Needs fund-raising campaign for the College of Law.
As the campaign began, our volunteers shared with us why it’s important for them to support the college. Some of their reasons will likely resonate with you too! Watch the video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifn6oTm-MA4
Rawlco Radio donates $100,000
Returning to school as a mature student often means juggling family and finances. That's why the college is grateful to Rawlco Radio, whose $100,000 gift created the Rawlco Radio John Gormley Mature Student Award, for students who are over 30 years old or who have been out of high school for more than 10 years.
John Gormley KC (JD’92) was a mature USask Law student himself before his long on-air career with Rawlco. The inaugural recipient of the award in September 2024 was Walter Mizak.
Inspiring students to succeed is a College of Law priority in USask's Be What the World Needs campaign.
Class of '72 gift surpasses original goal
At their 50th reunion, the Class of '72 decided to celebrate their friendships and achievements by creating a bursary to provide financial support to current USask Law students. They initially aimed to create a $25,000 fund, but thanks to the generosity of this group, the total has grown to more than $100,000. Income generated by the fund supports the "College of Law Class of 1972 Bursary," which is awarded to law students from any year who are in financial need. Thank you Class of 1972!
Award inspires student journey
Student Jayde Kuski of the Class of 2025 says that her student award uplifts and inspires her law school journey.
“I am extremely grateful to donors at the College of Law for supporting my educational journey. I am currently commuting back and forth between Saskatoon and Regina as my husband and daughter are still living in Regina, which has made law school a bit more expensive and challenging – extra gas and extra living accommodations. Student awards provide much more than financial assistance for me and my family; they stimulate me to thrive in my educational pursuits and dreams. My family and I are incredibly thankful.”
We're grateful to each and every donor whose gift supports a student award in the college! Inspiring student success is a priority of the @USask Be What the World Needs campaign.
$21,000 gift from Felesky Flynn LLP
We are grateful to Felesky Flynn LLP in Saskatoon for its $21,000 gift to create the Felesky Flynn Taxation Law Prize at the college.
Inspiring our students to succeed is a campaign priority and with donations like this we are able to respond to current student needs and attract the best future students. With the support of donors like Felesky Flynn LLP, USask Law grads will change the world.
