Join us as we celebrate Ron C.C. Cuming and his 50 years of contributions to the College of Law. The event will kick off with a keynote address and reception on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016 night followed by a full-day commercial law conference on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016.
About Professor Cuming
Professor Ron Cuming has 50 years of professional experience as a professor of commercial law and more than 30 years of experience as an international consultant, with expertise in secured financing, leasing and insolvency law. Professor Cuming joined the faculty in 1966. He was visiting professor at the University of British Columbia in 1972-74 and Assistant Dean of the College 1974-76. He served as Chairperson of the Saskatchewan Law Reform Commission, 1978-82. He received a USSU Teaching Excellence Award in 1992-93, the University of Saskatchewan Distinguished Researcher Award in 1998 and the College of Law Teaching Award in 2007. In 2015, Professor Cuming received the Lifetime Achievement Award - National Bankruptcy and Restructuring Section from the Canadian Bar Association. In 2016, he was given the title of Distinguished Professor.
Professor Cuming's research focuses on national and international secured financing law, leasing law, judgment enforcement law, leasing law and insolvency (bankruptcy) law. He was the principal draftsperson for Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan in the preparation of Personal Property Security Acts, legislation which also acted as models for five other jurisdictions in Canada. Professor Cuming was a technical advisor to the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (Unidroit) and the Canada Department of Justice in the preparation of the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment, 2001. He has acted as technical advisor to World Bank, the Organization of American States, the Asian Development Bank and other international agencies in the area of commercial law reform of developing countries including Albania, Armenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen. Professor Cuming co-authored a report on reform of Saskatchewan judgment enforcement law which resulted in legislation that completely revised this area of the law. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Law Reform Commission of Saskatchewan and a member of the Commission of Experts of the Supervisory Authority of the International Registry (ICAO).
